Standard halogen lamps with 500W or more power are usually regulated with a dimmer that cuts of part of the phase to reduce the illumination. IUt is interesting to note that the efficiency of the lamps for lower illumination values is not very good, in othe rwords, there is a non-linear relationship between the power of the lamp and the illumination.
The idea in this project is to use three lamps (100W, 200W, 500W) and save overall power by utilizing each lamp in its most efficient operational mode. The maximum power was still limited to 500W in total. The dimmer has 32 levels, and for each level can drive three lamps in parallel to obtain the lowest overall power for all illumination levels. The exact levels were determined using experiments.
