HIIRI is an optical mouse controller that would be able to detect the movement of a mouse without a special mousepad (this may sound strange, but earlier optical mice required a special mousepad with a tight grid to detect movement).
To detect movement 6 photodiodes in horizontal and vertical direction are integrated on the chip. Since the optical characteristics of the photodiodes for this technology was not known at the time, a series of photodiodes were integrated, these can be seen to the right and bottom of the picture.
