In this student term project, an ASIC for an electronic metronome has been developed. It features a wide scope of functions. The user interface consists of an 8 x 2 character LCD display, a single knob and a single push button. It is entirely menu-guided.
The beats are generated with less than 0.2% timingerror and can be adjusted in the range of 30 to 240 beats per minute (in 1 BPM steps). The sound samples to be played as beats are stored in an external 512 Kbit EPROM which can hold up to eight different sounds to choose from. To produce a rhythm, it is possible to program a certain period and mark any beat(s) therein as stressed, which will make them louder than normal. If desired, the beats can also be visually displayed by a blinking LED.
As a reference for tuning an instrument, a very accurate sine wave A with configurable 440 Hz / 442 Hz is provided. The chip employs digital volume control and passes the samples with 8 bit @ 8 kHz to the external D/A converter.
