The Transimpedance Medical Amplifier for Oximetry (TMA-O) chip features a 4 channel transimpedance amplifer (TIA) analogue front-end and a 32-channel LED driver. It is optimized for the requirements of LED and photodiode based spectroscopy, e.g. in pulse oximetry. The recently designed Doomsdaymachine 13 bit SAR ADC is included in this chip for digitization of the TIA voltage output. The highly configurable front-end covers a transimpedance range of 19kOhm-90MOhm, corresponding to (full-swing) input signal strengths between 13nA and 63uA. In a typical pulse oximetry application (0.1-20Hz signal bandwidth), overall loop dynamic range is 96dB (with noise contributions by the driver, LED, photodiode, and receiver taken into account). Overall power consumption -- i.e., including the usually dominant LEDs -- is 5.9mW which for equal signal quality corresponds to a saving of 68% in comparison to previous state-of-the-art.
The art-work is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey". Here, TMA-0 is the name of the opening-scene monolithe and stands for Tycho Magnetic Anomaly Zero
