This is a chip that can generate timing signals for Charge Coupled Device (CCD) Image sensors of up to 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution for astronomical applications. The chip has been specialized to generate the very long exposure times used for astronomical applications.
Nor surprisingly, the name Melanie is an acronym for Most Enhanced Lightweight AstroNomical Imaging Equipment. Kind of obvious actually :)
