Modern experiments in high energy physics use huge accelerators and detectors to gain sufficient resolution necessary for the study of elementary particles and their behavior. The efficiency of the H1 experiment will be improved by a major update in 2000. Millions of detector channels will have to be evaluated to distinguish between valuable and worthless collision events.
This ASIC can be used to perform the pattern recognition in the first-level trigger system and to count the particles moving along different directions. 240 daisy chained chips are to be used to equip a detector unit with 9600 sensitive pixels. The results are stored in a pipeline until the readout system requests the data.
