3G LTE (long-term evolution) Advanced is the newest 4G mobile communications standard, which specifies peak data-rates in excess of 1Gbps. Efficient and high throughput channel decoding is one of the major challenges in order to achieve the targeted data rate.
In this project a high throughput turbo decoder implementation for LTE-Advanced has been developed based on the 2009 LTEturbo chip. Using up to 16 parallel BCJR decoder cores and optimizing the internal latency of the turbo iterations, the improved architecture will achieve up to 1.6Gbps throughput according to post-layout results.
The chip has been named after the 1961 Oldsmobile "F-85 Jetfire", the first gasoline driven car using a turbo charger.
