For the microsystem high-resolution CCD camera an auto-focus algorithm for real-time lens control has been developed in a KTI project of the IBT.
DR. LENS Prototype ASIC, designed in a student thesis, realizes this algorithm. It serves to evaluate a sharpness criterion on the 1024 x 1024 pixel image data in real time, i.e. on each frame of 30ms duration. The criterion is based on the calculus of Square Plane Sum Modulus Difference (SPSMD). It is carried out in afreely programmable rectangular field inside the full image.
After a color transformation from RGB to luminance and the following SPSMD calculation the result is smoothed by an FIR filter and the lens control signals are generated thereof. The ASIC performs a number of multiplications per second which is far beyond any DSP capability.
The core of this prototype ASIC will be included in the final control and digital signal conditioning IC of the microsystem camera. See LEELOO.
